What is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is an imperfection in the curvature of the cornea of the eye — the clear, round dome covering the eye's iris and pupil — or in the shape of the eye's lens.

Usually, the cornea and lens are smooth and curved equally in all directions, helping to focus light rays sharply onto the retina at the back of your eye. However, if your cornea or lens isn't smooth and evenly curved, light rays aren't refracted properly.

If you suffer from astigmatism, your optometrist might tell you that your eyeball is shaped more like a rugby ball than a soccer ball.

You might have astigmatism as well as suffer from hyperopia or myopia, in which cases, you might require a customised lens to correct your vision. A Torga optometrist will be able to advise you as to which lenses will best address your specific type astigmatism.
